As more and more kids become eligible for a wish, nurses like Irene understand how a wish can help bring positive change to kids’ lives during a time they could really use the support.
“Many of my patients are battling very serious conditions,” said Irene. “They aren’t able to have a normal childhood and their families go through so much, so just hearing the good news about receiving a wish makes a huge difference to them.”
And once the wish process begins, Irene believes it has a huge impact on the kids.
“I really enjoy having conversations with parents because they are so excited to see their child so happy,” she said. “Some kids have never been on a trip before or they are limited to the hospital because of their illness, so a wish gives them something to look forward to that they otherwise might not get to experience. It’s rewarding to refer every single child I can.”
Irene regularly shares the simplicity of the process and the impact of a wish with other physicians and medical professionals in the hopes that they too will start referring more children who are eligible for a wish.
“Referring kids for a wish is one of the best parts of my job,” said Irene.
“As soon as I find out one of my patients qualifies, I immediately refer them for a wish. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork.”
