Volunteer of the Month: Jenny Aramburo

Jenny has lived in Yuma for the past 18 years, but she had never heard about Make-A-Wish Arizona until 2016, when one of her coworkers mentioned volunteering to grant a wish.

“My coworker Shelley was a volunteer wish granter and her stories of how much fun it was, how great it was to see the kids so happy, encouraged me to look into helping, too,” said Jenny.

Jenny completed volunteer training and signed up right away for Ana’s wish.

“You never forget your first wish kid!” said Jenny. “Ana wished to go to Walt Disney World and to see her get excited about her wish was really amazing.”

“She loves space, so she really enjoyed going to Epcot and Tomorrowland. Then, during one of her other days on her wish trip, we planned an experience at Kennedy Space Center where she could feel like she was actually floating in space,” she continued.

Since that first wish, Jenny and Shelley have encouraged three additional co-workers in their realty group to sign up to grant wishes and formed a wish granter group that often works together to grant wishes. In fact, their company has become the largest group of wish granters in the Yuma area.

“We like teaming up on wishes together but we would love to see more volunteers from around the Yuma area,” said Jenny.  “We are constantly talking about Make-A-Wish Arizona and the work we do because we know people in our community will want to help.”

Jenny, who is bilingual, also sees the need for more Spanish-speaking volunteers not just in Yuma but across the state.

“Kids who are Spanish-speaking or who have parents who are Spanish-speaking sometimes wait longer to have their wish because there are not enough Spanish-speaking wish granters in their area,” she continued. “We try to encourage people who are bilingual to see the good they could do as a wish granter.”

Jenny already has been a part of 10 wishes, and says she will continue volunteering as long as there are kids waiting.

“I wish I could do even more,” she said. “My kids are all grown up so now I have more time to give back and help others.

“It personally brings me so much joy to give children their greatest wish. The opportunity to learn from these families and be able to make a difference in their lives is beyond my wildest dreams.”
