Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about volunteering with Make-A-Wish® Arizona? Here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

WHAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE?

Make-A-Wish Arizona volunteer opportunities are diverse. Our biggest need is for wish granters and translators/interpreters. We also offer short, simple volunteer opportunities such as airport greeters, office volunteers and event volunteers. For a complete list of available volunteer opportunities and their descriptions, please click here.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOLUNTEER?

Make-A-Wish Arizona volunteer opportunities are designed for adults 18 years of age or older. To be a wish granter volunteer and work with children with life-threatening medical conditions, you must be at least 21 years of age, complete a screening interview, and successfully complete a criminal background check. Individuals under 18 years old are encouraged to check out our Kids For Wish Kids or Wishmakers on Campus programs.

WHAT IS THE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS?

Prospective volunteers must attend one of our monthly Volunteer Information Sessions, a one-hour overview of our mission and how you can help.  After attending the information session, prospective volunteers complete and submit a volunteer application. After applications are screened and processed, you may be required to complete an interview with our Volunteer Screening Team. Depending on the volunteer role you want to play, you might be required to complete a criminal background check and specialized in-person training.

HOW MANY VOLUNTEER HOURS DO I NEED TO COMMIT?

Make-A-Wish Arizona welcomes volunteers willing to lend us their time and talents for any amount of time. For most opportunities such as wish granter or office volunteer, our most successful volunteers could remain on their projects several hours a week, for months at a time. Other opportunities such as translators or event volunteers may be needed for shorter periods of time. Due to the long-term nature of granting wishes, we are unable to fulfill requests for community service or court-ordered volunteer hours.

MY CO-WORKERS AND I WOULD LIKE A TEAM BUILDING PROJECT. DO YOU ACCEPT GROUPS OF VOLUNTEERS?

Our wish granting mission provides a personalized, one-on-one wish experience to our wish kids and their families. Group volunteer opportunities are rare; however, we do plan events where group volunteers may be helpful. Groups are encouraged to support wishes by hosting workplace giving campaigns, planning an event that benefits Make-A-Wish Arizona, or becoming a corporate sponsor.
