Aaron, 8, spreads holiday cheer with wish to decorate New York

Aaron enjoyed his wish day decorating Macy's windows

“ A Macy's window and a wish make magic for Aaron. ”

Aaron first acquired the decorating bug after being diagnosed in 2007 with leukemia. He spent a few Christmas holidays in the hospital while battling his life-threatening medical condition and he soon was recognized on the unit for his skill in making his room a celebration of Christmas spirit.

For a small neighborhood block in Avondale, the holiday season doesn’t officially start until small decorations magically appear in each neighbor’s yard.  It is then that neighbor’s know “neighborhood decorator” Aaron, 8, is ready for Christmas cheer.

“Aaron is all into decorating and Christmas is by far and away his favorite thing to decorate,” said mom Tamra.

So, when it came time to determine his one true wish, Aaron focused on what he enjoyed the most – decorating for the Christmas holiday. Then he added a little spin – he wanted to decorate New York City for the Christmas holiday.

The iconic tree in Rockefeller Center, the streets and streets of lights, and the fact that it would be cold and “Christmas-y” all played into Aaron’s wish to head to the Big Apple with his holiday cheer.

Miracle on 34th Street…with an Arizona twist

The “elves” at Make-A-Wish® Arizona started working and, with the help of corporate partner Macy’s, made Aaron’s wish come true. He was allowed to create a special window at Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street—an Arizona miracle come true!

“It felt awesome to get to decorate and see all the work Macy’s decorators do for Christmas,” said Aaron. “And I liked keeping it a secret until opening night too. I told them we better do a pinky swear so I won’t tell anyone [what the window looked like].”

Aaron was able to hide his own secret snowman creation (his signature decorating imagery) in the Make-A-Wish window. It was unveiled with the rest of the popular holiday windows before the Thanksgiving holiday.

After the unveiling, the featured decorator was able to enjoy some down time with his family at the Broadway musical “Elf” and taking the boat around the Statue of Liberty. However, it was having his one true wish come to life before him that made the most impact.

“I would tell other wish kids to think what is the best thing that you could ever want to do, that would make you really happy,” said Aaron. “If you wish really hard for it, Make-A-Wish will make it happen.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for making my best wish come true. It was the funnest day ever!”
