US Airways, now American Airlines/US Airways, has helped to send hundreds of Arizona wish kids on their one true wish through its donation of both dollars and flights.
The Tom & Madena Stewart Lifetime Compassion Award honors in perpetuity those outstanding community members who, through their contributions to the arts, business, education, government, humanities, community service, philanthropy and science, have brought honor to themselves, Make-A-Wish Arizona and the communities where they work and live.
“More than 77 percent of our Arizona wishes involve travel of some kind,” said Elizabeth Reich, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Arizona. “US Airways , with its hub in Phoenix, has been a key airline partner for our chapter. They have helped to make hundreds of our wish kids feel special as soon as they start their wish experience at the airport.
“In addition, US Airways has more directly supported the mission by sponsoring our Walk for Wishes and our Wish Ball for many years,” continued Reich. “Their team of volunteers and generous employees really are the perfect representation of the Stewart’s legacy.”
The ball, which celebrates the mission of Make-A-Wish Arizona by raising funds to grant the wishes of Arizona children with life-threatening medical conditions, has grown dramatically in the past three years, raising more than $2.7 million in one evening. More than 570 people attended the event at The Phoenician.
“Make-A-Wish Arizona could not grant the 300-plus wishes we grant every year without the generosity of our corporate donors, such as US Airways,” said Reich. “We are proud to have them continue to help our wish kids take flight.”
