PHOENIX (March 16, 2016) — More than five million airline miles were raised on March 15 as part of a special one-day mileage drive for Make-A-Wish Arizona and future Arizona wish kids hosted by CBS 5 AZ through its Pay it Forward program.
The Pay it Forward program, with sponsors Biliner Water and Wells Fargo, hosted the all-day telethon, showcasing wish kid stories of hope, strength and joy, as well as live interviews with phone bank volunteers and, as a special surprise, the 5,000th wish to be granted by the Arizona chapter.
“We are excited to see such an incredible response from the CBS audience in support of our Arizona wish kids” said Elizabeth Reich, President and Chief Executive Officer at Make-A-Wish Arizona. “Airline tickets are our chapter’s largest expense, with more than 77 percent of our Arizona wish kids traveling in some way as part of their wish experience. We had a goal to raise two million miles so more than doubling our goal really showed us how generous people can be when it comes to helping grant the wishes of our Arizona wish kids and their families.”
Five million miles will help to send more than 125 wish kids on roundtrip domestic flights. This year, Make-A-Wish Arizona has a goal to grant 365 wishes, or one wish each day.
CBS 5 was the first station to announce the chapter’s record 5,000thwish, interviewing wish kid Brett, 18, who had his wish to meet Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels granted that day at an Angel’s spring training game.
“I’m pretty honored to be a part of Make-A-Wish Arizona,” said Brett. “I can’t thank Make-A-Wish enough for what they have done for me. The day was more than I even ever considered.”
