Congratulations to Linda Lieberman, a wish granter, who was recognized as the August Volunteer of the Month.
According to Linda, Make-A-Wish Arizona has always been her favorite charity. She donated regularly during her time as a teacher, but when switching career paths to realty, Linda decided to donate more than money and became a wish granter.
Starting in February 2012, Linda has already completed 10 wishes and is working on more this year.
Her most memorable wish was for Lily, a 12-year-old cancer patient, who wanted a playhouse. As a wish granter, she was able to see a community come together - friends, family members, even strangers - to make this Lily's wish come true.
"We had unbelievable support from friends and the community. Friends donated material and made custom curtains. Strangers donated all sorts of amazing items. Off-duty firefighters painted the exterior, added wood flooring, and created a garden.
After the firefighters left for the day, it started POURING. It was hot, dark, and slippery inside the playhouse, making it hard to work, but we wanted to make the inside as perfect as the outside. Myself and the other wish granters and volunteers added several framed pieces of Lily's art, some pillows, flowers, even a fake fire in the fake fireplace. Once the rain subsided, we couldn't get Lily out of the playhouse. She was giving tours by flashlight!
Lily passed away a few months later but I know that we fulfilled her wish beyond her wildest expectations. I will always remember Lily. Sometimes the wishes that require the most work are the most rewarding."
Thank you Linda for your work and your compassion toward our wish kids and their families.
