June Volunteer of the Month: Bev Paul

For Bev, granting wishes for kids with critical illnesses is about more than just volunteering – it’s a way to give kids the uplifting experiences she didn’t have when she had cancer.

Bev Paul is the June 2018 Volunteer of the Month.

Bev was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago, and she still remembers how hard it was to stay optimistic as she went through chemotherapy. “It was really scary, and during that time it was hard to think about the future in a positive light,” she said.

She moved to Arizona, cancer free, in 2013. Looking for volunteer opportunities, Bev loved that Make-A-Wish would bring joy to kids who were going through the same struggles she had endured.

“My own battle with cancer inspired me to give kids a wonderful wish experience – something they could focus on or dream about during their treatments, because I know how much that would have helped me,” said Bev.

“I love that I’m able to help distract children from the really difficult things they’re going through and give them a day or a moment that they’ll never forget.”

One of the wish moments Bev holds close to her heart was a reveal for wish kid Abby., who Abby wished to swim with dolphins in Hawaii.

“Our wish granter team hosted a party at her school and decorated the room with dolphin balloons and a dolphin cake,” Bev said. “It was so great to help put everything together so she could have that special moment, and the best part was when the entire school came down to the library to support her.”

Bev has been volunteering with Make-A-Wish Arizona for nearly three years, and her favorite part in getting to know each wish kid and keeping in touch with them. In fact, Bev just received amazing news from her first wish kid, who wished to go to Disneyland with his family when he was 15 years old.

“Now he’s graduated from high school and is going to be a fireman. He’s doing really well physically and is ready to take on the next chapter in his life,” she said.

As if Bev doesn’t already do enough to help her community, she is also a meditation teacher for young kids through Banner University Medical Center and a volunteer with the Shyann Kindness Project, an organization that serves underprivileged children.

“Everything I do is to help children,” Bev said. “It’s so important to focus on something bigger than yourself and make the world a better place, even if it’s just for one person. You don’t realize how big of an impact your contribution can make.”

My wish: I wish to go swimming with dolphins in Hawaii
