Cassandra, 8, struggled with an incurable brain tumor that made it hard to travel or to do other things most kids her age do. That is how Cassandra came to the decision to go with her one true wish for her future—to be a police officer.
With the help of the Phoenix Police Department, Make-A-Wish® Arizona was able to make Cassandra's wish come true and she was made an honorary Police Officer!
The next several days were filled with planning by passionate people who were determined to make this day special, including the creation of Cassandra’s very own police uniform! When the big day arrived, Cassandra was escorted to police headquarters by five squad cars, where Phoenix’s Police Chief presented her with her very own badge and badge number. Then, she visited a local precinct where she was presented her very own sterling silver dog tag.
Cassandra’s next stop was an orientation with the Phoenix Police Department’s Air Support Unit. She got a tour of the unit and was promptly whisked off for a recon mission in their new Augusta Helicopter. Cassandra’s last official stop was the Police Academy where the Academy Commander removed his personal Special Assignments Unit (SWAT) pin and handed it to one of his men, who pinned it on Cassandra.
The day ended with a personal tour of the Phoenix Police Museum, where Cassandra received additional gifts and a framed plaque commemorating her swearing-in ceremony.
Unfortunately, Cassandra succumbed to her disease just eighteen days after her big day as one of Phoenix finest. Cassandra was laid to rest in her police uniform and the memorial service was attended by dozens of officers whose lives Cassandra touched, including uniformed pall bearers.
“Make-A-Wish® Arizona did a very important thing for my family and my beloved daughter by granting her wish. My daughter was so happy and felt so important from her big day until her big debut into heavens gates,” said Lynn, Cassandra’s Mother.
