When Alexa, 7, decided on her one true wish, her mother Laura was not surprised. However, the wish trip itself was something Laura could have never anticipated. Here is what she had to say about her daughter’s wish trip:
"Alexa's wish to go to Walt Disney World... what was our favorite part? All of it, of course, but since being back home, I cannot stop thinking about how Make-A-Wish Arizona changed our life.
The trip was so, so much more than the hotel and theme parks for me. In fact, believe it or not, those were surprisingly the least significant parts.
Don't take this the wrong way, everything about Alexa’s wish trip was fun and we greatly enjoyed our time at the parks. It is a bit difficult to capture what I am feeling.
Each of life’s experiences, being the mother of a (CHD) Congenital Heart Defect child, seems to change me in some way or another.
This wish trip gave me an even deeper appreciation for Alexa and for the many other children with life-threatening medical conditions. What these children have gone through, what they are going through and what they may go through all to stay alive – but they always find a way to smile!
As for the trip itself, I feel blessed. I feel thankful. I feel grateful. We were together as a family and this trip reminded me of all Alexa has gone through medically and all the emotions that go with it.
At the same time, I couldn't help but find some peace on our wish trip because of the generosity, the consideration, and being around people with no judgments --- we were literally surrounded by KINDNESS everywhere.
We received the most sincere and genuine smiles. Alexa talked to strangers, as if they were not strangers at all. Make-A-Wish Arizona gives a wish kid hope, strength and joy and our family experienced all of that and more.
We also each felt the magic at Give Kids The World. Alexa's favorite place to be was in "Star Tower." She loved the butterfly ride and carousel too, and could go as many times as she liked – wow!
Yesterday we made donations to both Make-A-Wish Arizona and Give Kids The World because the volunteers of those organizations are what made Alexa’s wish come true. Now, we want to be a part of giving that experience to other wish kids.
We are now and forever Make-A-Wish Arizona and Give Kids The World alumni. You don’t wish for your child to qualify to be a wish kid, but if they do qualify, it is really something.
Thank you Make-A-Wish Arizona. Our hearts are full."
