To keep his spirits high while dealing with multiple treatments and physical therapy, Kendrick enjoyed FaceTime calls with his family in Hawaii.
“I like talking to my cousins about all kinds of things and I have a pillowcase with their pictures that I sleep with every night,” said Kendrick. “I already knew I wanted to go to the beach and see sand for my wish, and I chose to go to Hawaii so I could see my cousins, too!”
According to Kendrick’s mom Angela, their family is all actively involved in Kendrick’s recovery. In fact, it was her mom that first thought about Make-A-Wish.
“My mom nominated us for a wish experience last year, which was a big surprise. As the mom of a sick kid, it was nice to get a positive surprise on this journey for once,” said Angela.
Kendrick and his family flew to Hawaii and his biggest supporters were there to celebrate with him.
“Other members of our extended family also flew out to Hawaii to support Kendrick and make him feel special on his wish,” said Angela. “This trip was incredible because this was the first time we didn’t have to go to the hospital. It’s hectic going from doctor to doctor all the time and this trip gave us a chance to take a deep breath, like a reset button, and just focus on seeing Kendrick smile.”
Together, everyone enjoyed going to a luau, experiencing a dolphin encounter, and eating shaved ice, but Kendrick really loved playing with his cousin and his Transformers toy.
“Kendrick absolutely adored his wish and spending time in person with his cousins. He said he wasn’t going to come home and kept referring to our house in Arizona as his ‘old house’,” Angela said.
“I didn’t realize how much he liked sand and the beach,” she continued. “Kendrick has had two surgeries and he uses a wheelchair, but when he’s in the water he has mobility and the independence of being able to move on his own. I think that was fun for him to experience. It was the perfect wish.”
Now that Kendrick is back home, he still enjoys his regular FaceTime calls with his cousins, and he can’t wait to plan another trip to visit them.
“I want to go back to Hawaii so I can see my cousins again,” said Kendrick, whose health has improved. He has been off the drug he was on for two years and his tumor is stable.
