Emma’s wish to have a shopping spree was about so much more than new clothes and fun accessories. That day, she came home with something money can’t buy – a new sense of hope.
“Because I’m an only child, I wanted to bring my best friend Khloe on my wish,” said Emma. “She’s in my after-school program for special needs kids and that is where I was when I found out my wish would be coming true. I was so excited!”
News that Emma qualified for a wish was especially exciting for Emma’s mom, who has been by her side for every medical procedure and challenge in her life.
“Emma has a lifelong, debilitating illness, and suffers from multiple conditions including epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Breaking a bone may not seem like that big of a deal for a kid, but it’s devastating for Emma and can take a long time,” said her mom, Jaime.
After breaking her elbow last fall, Emma was referred to Make-A-Wish Arizona by her doctors at Banner Desert Hospital.
“I was shocked when I found out Emma could receive a wish, but not that she would choose a shopping spree,” said Jaime, with a laugh. “When we go shopping together, that always makes her happy. She loves bright colors and was thrilled to add things from her wish to her wardrobe.”
The morning of Emma’s wish, a limo arrived to pick her up for a day of wild excitement.
“My favorite part was that I could go crazy. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. I could just be a kid and not have to worry about my medical condition,” she said.
Emma enjoyed a worry-free day of shopping with her best friend, Khloe, at stores including Build-A-Bear, Bath & Body Works, Claire’s and the Disney Store, then enjoyed lunch at her favorite restaurant, Shake Shack.
Some “must-haves” from Emma’s shopping spree include her new unicorn hat and rainbow purse. While it’s easy to see the benefits of her wish on the outside, Emma now has a more positive outlook and new excitement for each day.
“Emma’s wish sparked a generosity that I hadn’t seen before. Her desire to share this experience with her best friend was really big,” said Jaime. “She’s even happier after her wish. There’s always a twinkle in her eye when she picks out something from her wish to wear for the day, which she still does every day. She talks about her wish non-stop.”
